I am on the committee of volunteers planning Texas Photo Roundup, a marketing strategies and professional portfolio review event in Austin on February 3, 2012. I'm really excited about the response we have received! This event is a hosted by the Austin/San Antonio chapter of ASMP (I'm on the board of directors) and Austin Center for Photography. Gingerbread, Baking, and Pretty Packaging

My favorite tradition of the entire year is baking Christmas cookies. After 40 sticks of butter and 5 bags of powdered sugar, my freezer was too full to add any more and I had to stop baking. This tradition (and many of the recipes) came from my neighbor growing up. We always looked forward to her cookies so I know exactly how friends and family feel, especially when they call to tell me that they ate them all! It brings me a lot of joy, especially to add local clients to the list this year!

Pecan Pie

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without pecan pie, according to my hubby Scott and our family friend, Cole, who hosted Thanksgiving this year. Made from scratch, of course! They said it was one of the best pecan pies they had ever had...what's the secret? I added 1/4 tsp of chocolate extract!

It's Fall in Austin

It's definitely fall in Austin. The days are shorter and the mornings are chilly but the afternoons have been pleasant and sunny. Fall isn't usually very colorful down here, at least not like it is up north, but this morning the crepe myrtle tree planted behind our fence burst into color and I just couldn't resist!

Purple Petals

About a month or two ago I thinned out my purple shamrock plant (oxalis triangularis) and stuck a few of the cut stems in a vase of water instead of throwing them away. To my surprise they didn't wilt and die within a few days, but thrived and grew roots. To my pleasant surprise, I noticed yesterday that the roots had grown a couple stems of their own. If you have never seen this plant, the petals close up at night and open like this in the mornings, and it also has purple flowers from time to time. It always comes back and is my favorite house plant.

Food Photographer / Eggs

I decided to have breakfast for lunch today. Scrambled eggs, bacon, rice, and cheese mixed together -it's really good if you've never tried it. I set the eggs down on the counter and the photography angels started to sing. We just moved in a couple weeks ago and I'm happy to have found "my place" to shoot with natural light...the kitchen island across from a north-facing window. While the rice was cooking I started to play. Now this feels like home. For the record, I only buy cage free eggs (for the sake of the chickens) and I highly recommend this to you as well. They don't cost much more, and each carton has a palate of lovely brown shaded eggs.

Vacay Cont. Rockport, MA / Austin Travel Photographer

To conclude my summer vacay in New England series, is Rockport, Massachusetts. This was the last day of our trip and this town is right up my ally! Rockport is an absolutely charming coastal town with plenty of great shops, sailboats, history, so much pretty! One of the famous landmarks in Rockport is Motif #1, which is the red fishing shack known throughout the world and featured in many paintings and photographs. Apparently it got its name from an illustrator and etcher who spent his summers in Rockport teaching students. He must have been tired of everyone sketching this building so he called it Motif No. 1 and it stuck. I liked this moment I captured with the duck swimming past and the glasslike surface of the water.

We mostly just walked around and went in a couple shops before they closed. Lula's Pantry is a great cooking store and the owners were so nice. We enjoyed chatting with them and they also have a back deck for viewing the harbor. That giant flaky pastry I'm holding is called an Elephant Ear from Rockport Fudgery; a delightful cinnamon/sugar crunchy thing that was bigger than my head!

We really enjoyed this town and I definitely recommend the drive to spend a summer day or two there if you're ever in Boston.

These are some of my favorites from our summer vacation in New England. The last day of our trip Scott and I explored the coast of Massachusetts. It was a rainy and dreary day, but I love the look it brings to these pictures. This is Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester and the rocky shore is Stratesmouth Landing Cove between Gloucester and Rockport. In the mid 1600s fisherman began fishing in this cove and they would brine and dry their catch in the sun to ship to England, the caribbean, and other far away destinations.

Leander Wildfire Labor Day

The last two days central Texas has been burning with wildfires. The largest fire so far is in Bastrop, a fire of biblical proportions. There is also a fire about a mile or two from where we live, in Steiner Ranch that has also been burning since yesterday afternoon. Early this evening a fire was burning in Leander, here are a couple pictures I shot on the way home tonight. This smoke is from the Leander fire. It was mostly white smoke and in the first image you can see the darker smoke as well. If you looked over the horizon on the other side of the sky you can also see smoke from the massive Bastrop fire.

New England Vacay Continued: Boston / Travel Photographer

We went to Boston for a day and checked out Paul Revere's house. A bit wonky as you can see but amazing to have that piece of history still standing with the city built around it. See the sky scraper in the background? They don't allow pictures inside unfortunately but here are a few of the outside. I really like the paint color actually, it's back in style!

From there we went to the Old North Church where the lantern was hung as a signal to spread the word quickly that the British troops were coming. You may remember this verse from the poem, Paul Revere's Ride, "One if by land, and two if by sea."

We also drove to Cambridge to check out Harvard University. This is how the smarties of Harvard spent that Sunday afternoon. My mom had to join them for a picture. haha. She really could have attended an Ivy League school if she wanted to but she went to Mizzou (University of Missouri). In the search for a bathroom at Harvard we came across this giant magnifined glass (by the way this word is not in the dictionary...it's supposed to be magnifying glass but I always thought it was magnifined...right?) Obviously I wouldn't qualify for Harvard for not knowing the correct spelling/pronunciation of this word. Anyway, this thing is filled with water and pretty awesome.

At the end of the day we checked out the USS Constituation, which was built at the order of George Washington in 1797. The ship was also nicknamed "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812.

Gettin' Sauced / Austin Food Photographer

This was the hottest weekend of the year in Austin, but we braved the 110 degree heat on Saturday for Gettin' Sauced, a BBQ sauce festival and contest from the guys at Man Up Texas BBQ. Taste of the South handed out their southern BBQ issue with the Texas BBQ story I shot for them. Scott and I waited in a very long line for Franklin Barbeque to get sandwiches for his parents since we dragged them along for a mandatory break from painting cabinets. It was like standing on the face of the sun but we had a good time, good food, good beer, and looking forward to next year...hopefully with more shade. :)

New England Vacay: Providence, RI

I always loved the TV show, Providence and was excited to see the area, also the home of Brown University. Scott and I walked around while we waited for Paragon to open for breakfast. Vacay: Newport, RI / Travel Photographer

Since we were in Rhode Island for my cousin's wedding, we decided to take a few extra days of vacation to see New England. The morning of the wedding day, we drove to Newport, RI where we had breakfast at Franklin's, a local favorite. After breakfast we walked around the historic neighborhoods, (previous post on porches here), enjoying the nice sunny day. There were so many beautiful flowers blooming, including hydrangeas, one of my favorites. We had frozen lemonades from Del's, a favorite treat for Rhode Islanders. Newport is also well known for its mansions, and is definitely a place I would like to return to for a longer stay, and include a trip to Newport Beach next time.

Beautiful Porches of New England

The 3rd porch is the Ernest Coggeshall House, c. 1880. The 4th and 6th porch is the Levi Gale House, built in Greek Revival style by architect, Russell Warren in 1835.

Vacay: Cape Cod

More pics from my recent trip to New England. From Plymouth we drove to Cape Cod for a few hours at the recommendation of my neighbor. That's Scott and my mom wading in the water. The day we arrived it was only 65 degrees, and we're talking July! I was freezing but it was a nice break from the 107 degree days we are having in Austin this summer. Soft sand, blue skies, shell searching, and a bag of Cape Cod Salt & Vinegar chips!

Plymouth Day 2

Burial Hill overlooks Plymouth Harbor and is one of the oldest cemeteries in America. The Pilgrims built their first forts atop this hill with cannons facing the harbor. The first winter, only about half of the Pilgrims survived, and the deceased were buried in unmarked graves because they didn't want the indians to know how many they had lost. There are gravestones from the 1680s including the gravesite of William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth colony, (It's the tallest one pictured, set 2) They are in the process of repairing some of the earliest gravestones as many are falling down or are broken. You can see this on the gravestone of Edward Gray from 1681. The stone with the green vines on the lower right is of Alexander Scammell 1747-1781. He taught the public school on this site and was also a Colonel and General in the Continental Army, mortally wounded at Yorktown. Adjacent to Burial Hill is the First Parish in Plymouth, a Unitarian church built in 1620. Burial Hill is a beautiful place to visit with a peaceful setting amongst the trees and a view of the harbor and town below.

We were in Rhode Island for a family wedding, so we took a few extra days to travel around New England and explore that beautiful area of the country. First stop was Plymouth, Massachusetts. Of course we just had to see Plymouth Rock, which was not at all what I was expecting. Still cool...but I could probably wrap my hands all the way around it...okay, not really but it's no bigger than a kitchen table. The structure around it is nice with the columns and view of the water. The pilgrims settled here because there was a fresh water source close by (6th picture) and they also had the ocean, so it was a perfect area...minus the threat of Indians and bone chilling winters that is.

Fun in Branson

I can't believe how big these kiddos are now! Miss Megan will be two in a month and Jonah is four going on twelve. I took a few pictures of them last month when we were in Branson. It was such a short trip so I wanted to spend time with them and play instead of being behind my camera the whole time. Probably a good idea, I am pretty sure I had water spilled on me at least three times. :) Little Megan and her pacifier...its kind of surprising you can understand every word she says with that thing in her mouth. Jonah is so smart and a very sweet brother, it's neat to have conversations with him now that he's bigger. He's a little like me, sticks to his guns and then gets upset when he gets in trouble...like he didn't see it coming, or didn't care if his principles were more important. Megan is so funny and unique I really miss being around her. I love how she says, "Hi Keymee" (Kimmie). We both share a love and appreciation for chocolate and food. Two evenings we made smores together, which was the first time they ever had them. So I set down some pieces of chocolate and graham crackers while I toasted the marshmallows and little Megan ate at least 6 little pieces of chocolate...and that was after she had a whole smore to herself! Ha! This was followed by a very large belch and everyone laughed. Cuteness all around.

Eureka Springs /Travel Photographer

Last month my mom, and my aunt, and I drove up to Branson with a detour to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I had no idea this little jewel of a town existed, it is charming as can be. The name gives it away, but there are natural springs throughout the town, many of which are surrounded by gardens in full bloom. We stayed at a bed and breakfast and watched the sun rise with a great view of Christ of the Ozarks. We were only there for less than a day, but I will definitely be going back.

One Year in Austin

One year ago today, we officially moved to Austin. My last photo shoot in Birmingham was Thursday and Friday we finished packing, painting, cleaning, and Scott and Lucy and I drove down to Point Clear, while my in-laws kindly drove all night to Houston with the truck. (I'm pretty sure we got the better end of that deal!) Why on earth would we drive to the coast of Alabama? To photograph my friend and photo stylist extrordinaire's wedding the next day. It was actually nice to keep that commitment because it was a good distraction from moving at the same time. I was happy to move back to Texas but of course it's sad to leave friends and my job, but we would be starting a new journey. So Friday- leave, Saturday-wedding, Sunday-drive to Houston.

Monday morning we left Houston early and arrived in Austin around 9 a.m. to find that our apartment wasn't ready. It was a disaster! The counter tops were scratched up, there was no shower head, the cabinet was broken, we couldn't open the dishwasher, the microwave door handle was broken, the patio was covered in chalk or something that had been there two weeks before when we came apartment scouting. It was clear they had not done anything but paint. Another surprise was the $30 a month valet trash fee they tacked on to the lease. Who the heck needs valet trash..and for thirty bucks? I think that is a frivolous waste of money. So that set me off into tears. It was supposed to be an exciting day that came crashing to a halt by the reality of sometimes things don't work out. All day the apartment office did nothing to fix any of it. When the gas man game to turn on the hot water heater he red tagged it for being severely corroded and we did not have hot water all night. Sounds like it was a super fun day doesn't it? At least we ended the day with BBQ from Rudys.

Here is the back of the moving truck-and this is after some stuff had been unloaded. Every nook and cranny of that thing was packed! Glad we got the big truck and not a POD. We don't even have that much stuff, I mean we don't live in clutter or nick-nacs or anything like that but you wouldn't believe it with all of our belongings crammed into one space.

So one year has passed and I really can't believe it has flown by at record speed. Luckily our house sold a few months ago in Birmingham so that was a relief but the market there was hit hard and we ended up losing a lot. It's sad, but it could have been worse. We are still grateful every day that we live in Austin. I think moving away was the best thing I have ever done because I had great opportunities and got a ton of experience. It's true that absence makes the heart grow fonder, we missed Texas, missed the bluebonnets, missed the Mexican and brisket, missed the beauty and everything about it that makes it home, including a much shorter drive to see our families. So here we are, one year later. Work is starting to pick up for me, I've been active with ASMP, I was a guest lecturer at the Art Institute, made some friends here, and I really do like living here...and I say that on a 101 degree day!

Homegrown Garden / Austin Photographer

There is no produce as fresh as what you grow in your own back yard. My mother in-law has a charming garden surrounded by a white picket fence that my father-in-law built for her, and she grows produce all year long in the south. I have never had more delicious carrots than the ones that I plucked myself, straight from the earth in her garden. There is a distinctively different rich flavor from organic home grown produce, that is hard to find in a grocery store. She grows tomatoes, garlic, onions, broccoli, carrots, melons, arugula, peppers, and corn...just to name a few.

Strawberry Patch / TX Editorial Photographer

Now that we are living in Texas again, we happily spend weekends exploring our home country and recently went to Fromberg's Farm in Alvin, TX, while visiting Houston. A magnificent oak tree seems to watch over the fields, where acres of strawberries grow, ripe and ready for the picking. There were mostly families there, and I asked a little girl what she was going to make with all those strawberries in her bucket, to which she replied, "We're gonna eat em!"
I would love to go back and photograph a picnic or table setting under that oak tree in the golden glow of a summer evening, surrounded by fields of strawberries.

Homestead Heritage / Austin Lifestyle Photographer

Just north of Waco is a quiet little town called, Elm Mott, TX. Nestled just a few miles off the beaten path from I-35 is Homestead Heritage at Brazos De Dios. This is a special place, where a community of homesteaders live and work in a way that hasn't changed with technology or modern conveniences. They value craftmanship, family, and sustainability. They make and sell hand crafted furniture, pottery, and fiber arts, as well as bakery items in the cafe. I had lunch there recently on my way home from Dallas and I spent a few hours walking around taking pictures and enjoying myself. The working Gristmill is a really interesting feature on the property. I bought some grits to take home, and enjoyed talking to the man working the mill, who took time out from what he was doing to talk to me about how it worked and said that the building itself was from the 1750s. There were several things I had not seen since I was last there, including the Fiber Arts shop, where the women were weaving and shades of colored yarns rest on wood beams overhead. I always enjoy browsing the items for sale at the barn and pottery shop. It really is an enchanting place to visit, but go on a day when the cafe is serving the strawberry cream pie. It is probably the best dessert I have ever had...that didn't have chocolate in it that is! They were out that day, guess I'll just have to go back again soon!

Scott and I went to San Antonio for Easter, just because we could! Being back in Texas, we really appreciate how short the drive is to San Antonio, the hill country, and to visit family. My favorite place for breakfast in San Antonio is The Guenther House, I mean look at the yumminess! It's located in the King William Historic District and was the home of the original owner of Pioneer Flour and also serves as a museum with a great gift shop. After we had breakfast we took a walk among the beautiful historic homes and enjoyed seeing an area of the River Walk that I had not been before. It was definitely spring as there were a lot of little ducklings swimming in the water They were so cute! We walked off enough of our breakfast to have a late lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Mi Tierra Cafe. Now I am hungry just thinking about it!

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Chef Dean James Max and the food/beverages at his newest restaurant, Asador in Dallas, TX. The images are running on the Yellow Cab signs throughout Dallas! Here are three of my favorite versions. The food was delicious by the way and the menu is based on seasonal ingredients made by open fire cooking.

The current issue of the always delicious, Taste of the South magazine is featuring a Texas BBQ by story I photographed for them written by Austin's own, Drew Thornley of the Man Up Texas BBQ blog. Scott came with me to assist (aka hold my tripod and reflector) the Franklin Barbecue shoot. For the four years I worked for this magazine in Birmingham, he was never able to come model for any of my shoots so it's kind of funny that his arm is the lead shot of this story. We got him in there finally! And his Aggie ring shows, represent! Was he ever a happy camper when he took a bite of this AMAZING Tipsy Texan sandwich! Since this shoot we have been back twice but dream about it all the time. They open at 11:00 but get there by 10:30 because they sell out really fast. The last time we met some friends there and didn't arrive until 11:30, and we waited in line for an hour and a half, and just made it before they ran out. It's seriously that good and yes, it's worth the wait.

A little peak at a day in the life of my sweet and ferocious dog, Lucy Sarsparilla. I keep a blanket on the couch for her and even her dog bone, and what does she do? She takes her naps perched on top of my throw pillows! She's so cute though, I just let her do it. All too frequently throughout the day she will growl at every single thing that moves outside the window behind her. I think that's why she likes it, it's a comfy spot to nap AND supervise neighborhood watch.

I made some yummy chocolate covered treats for Valentine's Day today. Of course there is my hubby's personal favorite and oh so popular food trend, chocolate covered bacon. I also made chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate drizzled pretzel sticks as well as miniature apples coated with white chocolate and dusted with cinnamon. Happy Birthday to Me!

Yesterday was my 30th birthday. My sister and brother in law surprised me with a bouquet of pink and purple flowers, which was really sweet. Scott brought home a red velvet cake from Nothing Bundt Cake with pretty packaging and balloons. His present for me was a surprise, a pair of huge wings, just under six feet in length each from Summer House Antiques, a great store in Marble Falls where we had seen them last fall. They are really neat, old wood with gold leafing. Here are a few pictures.

Puppy Love!

My sister just adopted this oh so adorable puppy! He was a rescue who's mother, a young dog herself neglected to feed her puppies and they were kept outside by their owner. He is only five weeks old and drinks goat's milk out of a bowl. His fur is thick and probably the softest thing I have ever felt. As for a name, that's still up for debate but I'm sure he will tell them what it is. There are so many dogs that need homes it's really sad, especially when it's cold in the winter. If you're looking for a new friend to love I encourage you to rescue a gem like this little guy. If you look at your local petfinder website it's shocking how many animals are listed, all waiting for someone to love them. Many if not most of them were abused, neglected, abandoned, or just left...I'm happy to say this little guy will always have a warm home, food, toys, and owners to snuggle him.

60th Birthday Party

My dad's 60th birthday party was this past weekend and a special birthday deserves a special cake! Sweet Indulgences in Grapevine made this 3D taxi cab cake for us and it turned out great! Although the party wasn't a surprise, the cake was a big surprise! It was red velvet, my dad's favorite (and mine!), and it tasted as good as it looked!

I made a 60 to hang on the wall with new prints made from old pictures of him, inspired by something similar in the current Martha Stewart Living. I added borders to make it fun and converted some images to black and white. I designed his birthday card to resemble a Jack Daniel's label, printed with a linen texture.

Christmas cookies are my favorite tradition. From when I was a kid, we would always get a plate of Christmas cookies from Ms. Luther who lived next door. Oh the variety! Which one would I have first? It's a tradition that I am happy to continue, and many of my recipes are the very same ones that Ms. Luther still makes and I have added some of my own. I usually make between nine and a dozen varieties of cookies and bars. Here are some of the cookies I made this year and we even added a mini cactus to celebrate living in Texas again. How adorable is little Olivia's sock monkey styled first birthday photo shoot? This is such a fun way to celebrate a first birthday and get wonderfully original and fun one year portraits at the same time!

It's funny how once the cake is in front of a little one, they know exactly what to do! Olivia did great, even taking fists full of cake, that's my kind of girl! I love the last image with the pout, she clearly was full of cake and icing at that point.

I want to thank the talented contributors to this shoot and I hope you will check them out. The beautiful red Nounours dress is from Francoise Studio and the perfect little blouse paired with it is the Piped Long Sleeve Shirt from Orient Expressed, which can also be monogrammed. 2011 Planner Inspirations

It's time to get next year's planner. I have to say, my planner is very important to me, not only to schedule photo shoots and appointments but I also like that I can look back on each year and see what I was doing every day and where the time went. April 6th, 2009 what did we have for dinner? I could probably tell you! What was I shooting and for which magazine? I could tell you that too! It's a good habit to record each day since the weeks and months have a way of flying by. This year I am definitely on the lookout for the right planner since the one I have for 2010 doesn't always agree with my Signo gel pens. I put together some inspiration planners to share with you today and I hope you will find one that pleases you too and take the time to record 2011!

From left to right...1. Lett's Blossom Calendar is pocket size so that's always nice when it can fit in your purse and the price is fantastic! It also comes in purple, grey, and red and each has a different flower pattern. 2. Faux Crocodile momAgenda is nice because it has space to schedule mom and up to four children, and it can also be personalized, which I really like. 3. This sterling-silver MyAgenda Day Planner is stylish and stain resistant and can be personalized as well. 4. I really like the graphics on this Botanica Wire-bound Weekly Planner from Franklin Covey. They also have notepads that match this planner. 5. Sorbet Weekly/Monthly Planner is not only pretty, but the company that makes this planner (MWV) donates to breast cancer research, treatment, and education so that is great! 6. This bright patterned weekly planner is by Etsy shop, MadalinasCraftWorld. This planner is designed on the front and back, which I like. 7. This Essence Express Day Planner has a fun pattern and comes in 2 sizes available from Day Runner. 8. The colors are fun in this Simplicity Ring-bound Weekly Planner Refill, which also comes in a wire-bound option. 9. From the same company is this really nice Classic Houndstooth Wire-bound Cover which is great if you like to reuse the same cover and add the pages as you go. 10. This Pocket Finsbury-Pink organizer is leather and comes with notepaper, address sheets, expense sheets, and address pages so it's great for keeping everything together. 11. This yellow hand bound planner is really nice made by etsy shop, MyHandboundBooks.

Since it's less than a month away from Christmas how about a little inspiration! From left to right: 1. I love this Card Holder from Pottery Barn. It's a great idea for a DIY project if you wanted to make your own. I would leave it up all year in my office and put little inspirations on it. 2. This Paper Music Oval Ornament has a nice Victorian feel and you can add a sentimental picture to it, also from Pottery Barn. 3. This fun Merry Christmas Garland from Anthropologie is a neat find to add a little cheer almost anywhere. 4. This Monogramable Round Locket Ornament is really pretty and I really like that it can hold 2 pictures inside. 5. My favorite ornament find, Snow Day Felt Ornament Patterns are just one set of several adorable patterns from Posie Gets Cozy blog. 6. How cute is this FREE Half Eaten Gingerbread Man pattern from Elsie Marley? I would make these and add them as a bonus gift to decorate wrapped presents. 7. This Santa Cornucopia from Dresden Star would look nice hanging on an interior door filled with candy. They make lots of beautiful tree toppers, ornaments, and other vintage holiday decorations as well and they also sell vintage lead tinsel if that floats your boat.

8. This Felt Owl is just one in a set of 3 from Crate & Barrel. I think they could also be great to make a mobil out of and hang over a crib, maybe with 2 sets...just a thought. 9. Santa Lucia Snowflake Set from Anthropologie is really pretty and comes in a set of twelve wood snowflake ornaments. 10. Last but not least, these glittering Deer Ornaments from Colonial Candle have a special look that would be a nice addition to any tree.

This past weekend Scott and I joined his parents at a cabin on Lake Buchanan. It was a nice weekend and I especially enjoyed shopping in Marble Falls. Scott and his dad got a little bit of fishing in on Saturday evening. Fishing for bait is more like it though, the water was low where we were staying so they didn't have much luck, but they enjoyed it as they always do. The last picture was taken Sunday morning, just after sunrise.

How to Enjoy a Campfire /Austin Editorial Photographer

Now that you know how to build a campfire you're ready for the fun part! Last weekend we cooked breadsticks over the fire. This idea came from the latest issue of Sweet Paul, an online magazine that I'm swooning over! This was one of those things that is right up my ally and I was so excited to try it out! For the recipe click here.
I cut the recipe in half because it said it made 16 breadsticks, but we only got 4 breadsticks instead of 8 so next time I may double the recipe. I also added a lot more flour than it called for as I worked the dough because it was pretty sticky at first. We cut branches off the pecan tree and wiped them with a wet rag to make sure they were clean. Then we wrapped a piece of dough around each stick and held them over the fire. It took probably about 8-10 minutes to cook them through and they were good! Next time I may add a little honey to the dough and see how that turns out. My father-in-law enjoyed his breadstick dipped in butter, cinnamon, and sugar, which I want to try next time, and maybe even attempt a pretzel version, now that sounds good! Thanks to Sweet Paul for the wonderfully inspired idea and recipe!

How to Build a Campfire /Austin Editorial Photographer

Ever wonder how to properly build a campfire? It's your lucky day because I will show you! First make sure your fire pit is is cleaned out and start making a teepee shape with sticks. Just keep adding sticks until it looks like Scott's awesome teepee in the center image or my not so awesome but still functional teepee in the image next to it. (In my defense all the good sticks were used the day before.) Collect dried leaves and pine needles and surround the stick structure with them. Push some into the center of the teepee as well. Drop a few lit matches into it and voila, you have fire. Add larger logs to keep the fire going and you have a smore and ghost story-telling good time. I'll pass on the ghost stories personally, but bring on the marshmallows!

Fun Finds at Marburger Farms /Austin Editorial Photographer

Yesterday I met my sister, Katie in Round Top, TX for the Marburger Farms Antique Show. It was a feast for the eyes...antique furniture, lighting, beautiful linens, so many pretty things! We walked, and we walked, and we walked but there was so much to see we didn't want to miss anything! Yesterday was the first day of this 5 day event and since we got there early (considered pre-shopping) it was a whopping $50 for the two of us to get in, plus $9.50 for a drink and sandwich. I only bought one thing, a wonderfully old wood basket to use in my apple orchard shoot coming up next week, which was a great deal at five bucks...but with admission and everything I guess it's more like a $65 basket! It was definitely worth the drive and everything, and there were actually several other shopping events set up in the area and other antique stores there in Round Top, so I could see going for a couple days next time to take it all in. Here are some of the great things we saw yesterday.

Austin Photographer, Arachnophobia!

I've only lived in Austin for a few months and I love it here...except for one thing! TARANTULAS! This is the fifth tarantula we've seen in the past week! I watched this arachnid creep and crawl through the grass, across the parking lot, and then scale the side of the building.
After a little googling we found that they probably won't bite, probably? but they come out at night and are good for humans because they eat bugs and could even eat mice. But get this, they can live up to 30 years! No wonder there are so many around here! I won't be taking my little Lucy out in flip flops anymore, especially in the dark! They could come from at me from any direction, the trees above or the grass below, yikes! What if I step on one? Now I'm paranoid. I had trouble even editing the pictures in lightroom, seeing it larger than life on my screen was sure to give me nightmares!

New Toy

I have a new printer and I'm loving the things it can do! I can print directly onto DVDs, which is a lot safer in my opinion than printing labels and sticking them on, and the DVD itself looks so much nicer! Plus now it's a lot easier to see what's on the disk than trying to read my handwriting. :) Yay for new toys!

This was a fun family portrait shoot I did recently. These kiddos are growing up so fast, I can't believe it! I've been photographing them since they were one day old and one week old. Here's how a photo shoot with a 3 year old and a one year old goes...the 3 year old just want's to go play on the playground and the one year old just wants to walk around and explore, but who can blame them? Little Mr. and Miss. Independent! I think we got some cute ones though, even a good one of mom and dad.

My mom just retired from teaching this year and is now on facebook and has a new hobby...her smartphone. She is hooked! My mom has always liked trivia and finding the answers to things (usually random things) so in any conversation if a topic is brought up and there are multiple "I think it was ___" she is on the case! She'll whip out that phone and "google it" in no time, and may even give you a multiple choice option to see if you can guess the correct answer that she is powerfully holding in the palm of her hand. It's funny.
She joined facebook earlier this summer and never added a profile photo so if you clicked on her page it would show the generic facebook I don't have a picture loaded but I'm a girl drawing. :) So I did a little hard drive digging and found a good one of her and my Aunt Wendy that I shot.

I'm glad my mom is enjoying her new found freedom as a retiree and happy she is spending her days being "with it" instead of playing scrabble a the senior center or watching reruns on the gameshow network all day. Although...with all that googling she's been doing on her phone she might do pretty well on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? :)

Surprising Find/ Austin Photographer

We went to the park on Sunday and stumbled upon this surprising find. How the heck did that get up there? I know you can grow a cactus easily by just throwing it on the ground but in an oak tree? It's a mystery to me, I even googled it and the only thing I found was a song called "Cactus Tree" by Joni Mitchell. Kind of funny. It looks like there's a heart where a branch was removed. You gotta love the hill country, oak trees and cacti are just meant to be!

Outdoor Portrait Session / Austin Photographer

It's his favorite because he likes to feed the fish and story goes that one day last year while doing just that he threw his Mimi's car keys right into the pond! Today is an exciting Monday because Wiley Valentine is featuring me on their fabulous inspiration blog for the custom first birthday photo shoot I styled and photographed for little Megan. This was so much fun to do, a special photo shoot where Megan was the star and the props made it so adorable! We started with Megan in her birthday suit with a tutu of course! She enjoyed playing with the props, specifically the light up cupcakes. Then she had a wardrobe change to a more icing friendly pink swimsuit tutu and we brought out the cake. She knew just what to do and even stuck her foot in the icing!

Austin Photographer/80th Birthday Party

Bumpy is 80 years old today! He's Scott's Grandpa and yesterday we had a birthday party for him, the first real birthday party he has ever had. It was a great turn out and so much yummy food...BBQ brisket, sausage, chicken, honey baked ham, potato salad, mac & cheese (I made that, Aunt Mar's recipe...even better than Paula Deens!), beans, corn casserole, sweet potatoes, deviled eggs, cherry salad, green bean casserole, german chocolate cake, pineapple upside down cake, lemon bundt cake, cookies, and a birthday cake with a picture of Bumpy on it when he was just 18 years old. It was truly a Texas sized feast!

Bumpy was a nickname given to him when he was a little kid bumping his head under the table and such. It wasn't until the first day of school that he learned his name was really James! He still goes to work every day because it makes him happy and he hasn't slowed down. He's definitely the youngest 80 year old I've ever seen!

Hi friends, I just added a Subscribe button to my blog right above the About Me tab. If you're a Google Reader fan like I am you can easily add my blog to your Google Reader account. Just click the Subscribe button, then click Google and then Add to Google Reader.
If you don't know what Google Reader is and you follow blogs you are in for a huge time saver. If you have a google account you just go to google and on the top left where it has the links for Maps, Gmail, etc. there is a link that says more. Google Reader is under that tab, or you can still get to it in gmail as well.
Here is why it is so great, I can see all of the blogs I follow in one place and it will also show me if there are new posts that I haven't seen yet. I added the subscribe button because I have a huge bookmark menu of blogs that I haven't added to my google reader account yet, and having a Subscribe button makes it so much easier to add without ever leaving the blog.

Engagement Session & St. Louis Shot Party

Adrienne and Beau's wedding was held at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama on June 12th. It was a beautiful wedding under huge oak trees with a view of the bay. It was a wonderful day and so much fun! Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Williams!

We are moving back to Texas and unfortunately can't take our beautiful house with us. My yellow "rose of Texas" climbing rose bush was in full bloom this week and it was an impressive show. I'm glad I took pictures earlier in the week since it rained all day today. There are plenty of yellow petals all over the driveway now. It will continue to bloom throughout the summer but it was nice timing with the pink azalea and tulips, which just bloom in the spring.

Christmas in historic St. Charles, Missouri.

I love to visit St. Charles and we were able to go after Thanksgiving this year for the Christmas parade and festivities. St. Charles is part of the Louis and Clark trail and the first capital of Missouri was located here. For Christmas they have Santas from around the world and other Christmas characters who pass out cards with the description of their tradition to the children.

It has finally started feeling like November this week. The weather has been so nice and warm that it has been hard to imagine that Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. The leaves were not as colorful this year, most of them just kind of turned brown and fell off but I still found some pretty ones.

Don't pomegranate seeds look like little gemstones? Their color and irregular shape reminds me of rubys. If you have never tried them they are wonderfully crunchy and are a nice addition to salads or just eaten as a snack. Plus they are full of antioxidants. It takes a little work to get them out of the pomegranate itself, but I think it's worth it.

I really like it when Halloween falls on a Saturday. We had a good day yesterday carving pumpkins and decorating the entry for trick-or-treaters, complete with spider webs and flying bats. I'm glad I bought more candy and playdough on Friday because we almost ran out! The highlight for me is when the really little kids get so excited when I give them fun size playdough. "She gave me playdough Daddy!" was heard a few times. This year I bought a fog machine that worked long enough to take pictures and then it died.

Scott and I went to Atlanta a couple weekends ago for a Braves game and stayed over to go to the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest aquarium. It was really neat, definitely better than the Coca-Cola museum. The jellyfish were my favorite.
